The Torridge estuary is unique in that it is virtually unspoilt by tourism, thereby retaining much of the “Olde Worlde” charm, unlike many other West Country seaside areas, as can be seen from the pictures above.
Appledore,a fishing village at the mouth of the Torridge Estuary is typical of many Small Villages along the North Devon and Cornish coastline, with gaily painted Houses and narrow winding streets. There is Sailing, Sea and Fresh Water Fishing or just “messing about in Boats”. There is always something interesting to see; salmon boats at work, rowing fours, water skiing and various classes of local racing yachts, or cargo vessels and small trawlers en route to Bideford or the open sea. Appledore is situated 3 miles from an attractive market town, Bideford, and 1.5 miles from The Golden Sands of Westward Ho! A beautiful, safe, sandy, Beach ideal for Surfing and all the family, backed by 600 acres of Country Park and Golf Links. Westward Ho! though small, has all the pleasure activities of a large resort.
Spring comes early in the West, and it should be emphasised what glorious months April and May are. People who come for the first time during these months are often surprised by the beauty of the district. Autumn is lovely too, especially October when the leaves are turning colour, and the additional bonus of freedom from crowds and when rates for accommodation are the cheapest.
To the East – Exmoor (Lynton and Lynmouth), Ilfracombe, Croyde Bay and Woolacombe, Saunton Sands, Barnstaple (the last being our nearest railway station).
To the South – Exeter, the Torridge Valley and the lovely rural hinterland, peaceful and unspoilt.
To the West – Buck’s Mills and Clovelly: these picturesque fishing villages are very popular beauty spots.
Hartland Quay, Stoke and Hartland Village: A dramatic and remote district. The Quay and the village are some distance apart, but both should be seen – the Quay for its rugged marine views and the village for its interesting Norman Church of St. Nectan’s.
